The Open Window (Questions)

1.      Identify three literary devices in the short story and their significant.
a)      Irony
-  Vera had been amusing Framton with the whole lie about the tragedy three years ago. It is ironic that her lie actually worked out and that they happened to come home while Framton was still visiting which made Framton freaked out and ran away.
b)      Flashback
- “Some of them, as far as I can remember, were quite nice.” (Para. 3, Line 5)
-  Mr. Nuttel's sister flashback about the time when she was staying at the rural area which she tolds him to go.
c)      Symbolism
 -  The symbolism in this short story is the open window itself. When Vera Sappleton tells Framton Nuttel the story of Mrs. Sappleton’s husband, the open window shows symbolism of Mrs. Sappleton’s sadness and heartbreak at the loss of her husband and younger brother.

2.      Where is the climax in the short stories? How is this achieved?
-   I think the climax in the short story is when Mrs. Sappleton's husband and younger brother came back from hunting and Mrs. Sappleton talks to them who coming in through the window.
-  “Here we are, my dear, “said the bearer of the white mackintosh, coming in through the window, “fairly muddy, but most of its dry. Who was that who bolted out as we came up?” (Paragraph 26)
-  Framton shivered slightly and turned towards the niece with a look intended to convey sympathetic comprehension. The child was staring out through the open window with a dazed horror in her eyes. In a chill shock of nameless fear, Framton swung around in his seat and looked at the same direction.

3.      Describe the setting.
·         In a French-style house. (“indicating a large French window that opened on to a lawn.” - Para. 12, Line 2)
·         In Mrs Sappleton living room.

4.      What is the lesson that you can learn from the short story.
·         The lesson that I can learn is we should not easily to trust someone who we not close in a relation. What he/she said might be true and not true.

5.      In the short story, does Vera Sappleton show hospitality? If she was a Malaysian would be she has responded in like manner. Why?
·          If Vera was a Malaysian, she would not responded in like manner because in Malaysia, it is considered as rude. We are suppose to treat our guest nicely. For example, we treat them with some food and not by telling them lies.

6.      If you were Nuttle, will you trust every word that Vera said?
·         If I were Mr. Nuttle, I would possibly trust every word that Vera said. It is because young girl doesn’t make lie easily. In addition, I’m new guy at the place so she might want to help someone who needs help as I didn't know much about that place.
